I don’t know. I think about this all the time. All I can think to say is that dreams are the purest fiction we can ever obtain. This is because all dreams are, almost by definition, remembered dreams. We wake up and remember a dream. Because we are unconscious when we actually have the dream, in no sense can they be said to happen to us. There is no us present when we are asleep and it stretches the bounds of sense even to use the phrase ‘when we actually have the dream’ in reference to the event we remember. The feeling of sand slipping though a fist when we try to remember dreams is what it feels like to be as close as we can ever get to events with no witnesses and to things that are not real.
